- ICSD Survey Reveals High Rate of Alcohol Use - By Eva G.
- According to the Student Life and Culture Survey (SLCS) conducted in April 2007, the percentage of students at IHS who have tried alcohol is higher than the national average. Seventy-four percent of 10th graders and 77 percent of 12th graders at IHS have used alcohol at least once in their lives, compared to 62 percent and 73 percent, respectively, of 10th and 12th graders nationally. Additionally, the percentage of students in Ithaca schools in grades 6-12 who used alcohol in the 30-day period before taking the survey increased between 2005 and 2007.
- Principal Wilson to Resign After Five Years at IHS - By Eva G.
- On Tuesday, February 26, the Board of Education (BoE) passed a resolution granting Joe Wilson tenure beginning June 30, 2008. In the same resolution, the BoE accepted Wilson's resignation as principal of Ithaca High School, effective June 30, 2009. Although The Ithaca Journal reported that Wilson had offered his resignation in exchange for tenure, both Wilson and BoE President Tom Frank said that there had been no such arrangement.
- Recyclables Throughout District Thrown Away - By Ryan A.
- In Tompkins County, residents are required to recycle newspaper, glass bottles and jars, metal food and beverage cans, and corrugated cardboard. In addition, residents are encouraged to recycle mixed paper, boxboard, and #1-#7 plastics. Despite this, much of the waste in Tompkins County is made up of recyclable materials.
- IHS May Add More Security Cameras - By Andrei F.
- Recently, administrators have discussed increasing the number of video cameras at IHS. Video cameras were installed throughout the campus in April 2005, and there are currently 12 cameras in the school. These cameras are positioned in hallways and on the outsides of buildings to survey parking areas and areas of major activity, such as the quad.

- According to a 2005 Gallup Youth Survey, 61 percent of teenagers aged 13-17 said that their schools had taken safe-sex approaches to sex education, as opposed to abstinence-only approaches. In another study, the same organization found that 85 percent of teenagers had discussed adolescent pregnancy in class, and 69 percent had discussed birth control and contraception.
- Stolen iPod Returned After Four-Month Search - By Andrea Y.
- On February 7, IHS Associate Principal Debra Rivera was able to reunite a stolen iPod with its rightful owner after months of searching. In June 2007, an IHS student stole the iPod from the car of its owner, Ithaca resident Joe Horrell. Horrell reported the theft to the police, who replied that there had been four similar reports from the same neighborhood. When the police were unsuccessful in locating the missing iPod, Horrell gave up the search.
- Certified Department Chairs a Rarity at IHS - By William G.
- Among the 11 departments at IHS, there are only three certified department chairs: Ken Pickens of the English Department, Carol Spence of the Art Department, and Jeannette Palmer of the Physical Education Department. Janet Abowd, leader of the World Languages Department, is in the process of becoming certified.
